In the first title, Amy and her mother are in a fierce trailer accident after rescuing an abandoned horse. Amy'smother is killed immediately, and Amy is rushed to hospital in a serious condition while the horse is sent to a local vet. When Amy wakes from her coma, she must face returning to life at the stable without her mother. She cowers in her room after returning from the hospital, denying the comfort she could find in the familiar smell of grain and the welcoming nickers of the horse. Not until a pony falls terribly ill does Amy consider her mother'sabsolute commitment to horses; then she realises it is her own deepest passion as well.
