The Blue Angel

Doctor Who BBC 8th Doctor

Marlene Dietrich stars as showgirl Lola Lola, the main attraction at The Blue Angel. When the somewhat dour Professor Emmanuel Rath (silent film leading man Emil Jannings) discovers his pupils mooning over some saucy postcards of the cabaret star, he is enraged by their depravity. Visiting the speakeasy to denounce its louche activities, Professor Rath too is seduced by Lola's charms, and in turn compromises his own standing. One of the first films of the sound era, Joseph von Sternberg's interpretation of Heinrich Mann's tale of one man's demise one of the most iconic films in the history of cinema. Filmed simultaneously in German and English, Directors Suite presents both the German version and the 15-minute shorter English version, both painstakingly restored by Germany's Wilhem-Friedrich-Murnau-Stiftung.Special Features: Original German language versionOriginal English language versionAudio commentary by Dr Adrian Martin, Senior Research Fellow, Film & Television Studies, Monash University and Co-editor of Rouge Magazine www.rouge.com.auHollywood Remembers: Marlene Dietrich A profile2 Original German TrailersScreen Test with Marlene DietrichRestoration Scene ComparisonInterview with Marlene DietrichMarlene Dietrich Performances
