Harold and the Purple Crayon
Crockett Johnson
One evening Harold decided to go for a walk in the moonlight. But there wasn't any moon, and Harold needed a moon for a walk in the moonlight. Fortunately, he had brought his purple crayon. So he drew a moon. He also needed something to walk on. So he drew a path. Harold didn't seem to be getting anywhere on the long straight path. He took a short cut across a field, and this led him right to where a forest ought to be. He didn't want to get lost in the woods, so he made a very small forest, with just one tree an apple tree. Harold thought he had better draw something to guard the apples, and it was what he drew next that started Harold and the purple crayon off on a series of exciting adventures. They traveled across the sea and up a mountain and through the air, and Harold began to wonder if he'd ever be able to find his bedroom window. But, of course, he did with the aid of the purple crayon and as the book ends, The purple crayon dropped on the floor. And Harold dropped off to sleep. The ingeniously imaginative concept behind this picture-story book will intrigue little children and keep them completely absorbed as page by page unfolds the dramatic and clever adventures of Harold and the purple crayon.
